Day 03 - Gorham to Bar Habor, ME

Cool temperatures greeted us this morning. We hit the road by foot to grab breakfast at the White Mountain Café around 7am. Back at the hotel we packed and got moving at 8:45am. Today would be a shorter ride day (thank goodness!) at about 200 miles.

Our route took us into Maine early, continuing through the last bit of the White Mountains.

Within an hour we were in the town of Rumford Falls, known for a waterfall and the pungent paper mill plant.

Not long after, we thought we took a wrong turn.

Past the towns we were back on the highway and could see huge wind turbines at the top of the mountain ridge.

At 11am, Michele needed a break to adjust her helmet. Nearby we noticed this store offering necessities for the elderly.

"Walkers
Canes
Commodes"

After the break, we got on Interstate 95 for a 20-mile stretch. There were dramatically fewer cars on this stretch than in Northern VA and soon we arrived in Bangor. We stopped for lunch at O’Donnell’s Deli. A friendly Irish husband and wife team own the shop and personally prepared our Ronald Reagan Ham sandwich. The owner asked about our travels, where we are from and what we do for a living. He said he had an aunt and uncle who owned a house back in the 1950s in Falls Church, Va, and that he had been there when he was small.

After lunch, we walked a few blocks up to visit author Stephen King. Jerry is a big fan and we had a thrill gawking at his beautiful home and property.

Just an hour remained for our trip to Bar Harbor. It was an easy drive on highway 1A and 3. Soon we were greeted with the smell of the sea and views of blue water.

We checked into our inn, The Quimby House Inn in downtown Bar Harbor and safely stowed the bike for a few hours until dinner.

One of our highlights of the day was meeting Michele’s longtime friend, Kelley Noble, for dinner right outside of the island. Kelley was Michele’s Algebra 1 teacher in the 9th grade and our realtor when we sold our townhouse. Kelley retired from both teaching and the real estate business in 2006 and bought a summer home in Maine to be near her son. In fact, their properties are adjacent to each other here in Maine.

Rob and Jerry each had a lobster roll, it being a very popular local dish, and Kelley had a small lobster.

Michele had chicken fingers and a salad, no lobster for her! We all sampled the local blueberries with homemade blueberry cake and pie for dessert. It was a great way to cap off the third day of our trip.

Tomorrow we plan on doing some hiking within the park!
